How to use a coordinate plane

A coordinate plane is a grid for locating points. Two number lines cross at a right angle: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. Their intersection is the origin, written (0, 0).

Read an ordered pair

A point is written as (x, y). Start at the origin, move horizontally according to x, then vertically according to y. Positive x moves right and negative x moves left. Positive y moves up and negative y moves down.

Know the quadrants

The axes divide the plane into four quadrants. Numbering begins in the upper right and continues counterclockwise: I is upper right, II upper left, III lower left, and IV lower right. The signs of the coordinates identify each quadrant.

Plot points carefully

Check the scale on each axis before plotting. Move from the x value first, then the y value, and mark their intersection. When comparing points, consistent grid spacing makes patterns easier to see.

Print a coordinate plane

Create a printable coordinate plane with adjustable grid spacing and page dimensions. Keep the axis guide enabled for a standard plotting sheet, then print the PDF at 100% scale.
